Individual boundaries between people must be broken in order to reinvent one’s identity. This codependency induces a sort of stagnation. In my year work, I reinvented three key conceptual performance art pieces for film. My concept explores the relationship between people, and how the individual imposes boundaries on himself. The overlays of film represent two sides: the individual versus the box they are confined to. This work is existentialist; essentially a microcosm of society. The film itself has no spoken dialogue, but rather a surreal, eerie soundtrack accompanied by a subtitled poem. The poem acts as a narration to the actions unfolding onscreen, yet the words, too, seem ambiguous. Migrate (2017) Mixed Media For many years, I have experienced dissonant feelings: periods in which my soul does not form a part of my physical form. Often, this results in a sort of disconnection; I will begin to view my actions as if I am in third person - watching myself perform, never acting as myself. Dissociation is the action of disconnecting or separating - to go from one part of oneself to another, as in a shift in being. The dissociative spectrum encompasses both pathological (eg. PTSD) and non-pathological (eg. daydreaming) disorders. This work acts as a means of gaining freedom through expression. It is a personal work based off of personal experience.
